[non-steam] Work around for v2.602

Post by dugowars »

This is for those who cannot update to the relaunch of COH on Steam
*If you have problems in installing the MC 1.016 installer.
*the installer doesn't let you decide the installation path and just quits.
*displays "could not access network location".

Fix
1) Download first the Modern Combat 1016 Installer, and if inclosed in a rar file extract the .msi installer.
2) Download this msi extracting program. ( from http://lessmsi.activescott.com/)
3) Extract it in a folder and run the lessmsi.exe.
4) Locate your Modern Combat 1016 Installer and extract it.
5) It should prompt something about to where the extracted files should be placed. So just place it anywhere (i.e Desktop) but NOT you COH directory yet!
6) Wait patiently. (it might hangs for a while, but don't worry its surely working in the background.
7) When its done. Locate the extracted files and copy the ModernCombat folder into the COH directory along with the other files.
8) Download the 1.017 and 1.018 patches.
9) And apply patches to the COH directory in order.
10) Lastly, create a shorcut of the RelicCOH.exe and paste this to the target, -dev -mod moderncombat.
mine is "D:\GAMES\Company of Heroes Tales of Valor\RelicCOH.exe" -dev -mod moderncombat

It worked for me, so just give it a shot :)

When I paste this part, " -dev -mod moderncombat", it makes the link not work. Before that part is changed, the shortcut works. The path is correct. I made sure to not add quotation marks in the wrong place. I don't understand, what am I doing wrong?

I'm Operating Windows 7...but that's kind of irrelevant I think.

Why the need for an external program to run the .msi?

please read all what's written above.. Its for those who can't run the installer. Like what happened to me, it wouldn't let me choose the installation path and displays "could not access network location..." (I already tried to dl from different sources of their file from their site and mod db).

When did you download the installer? That issue was fixed quite a while ago to my knowledge; we replaced the initial installer with an updated one that allows the user to manually edit the installation directory.

I did download the installer today following the link http://www.moddb.com/mods/company-of-he ... aller-1016 provided at the downloads page (http://coh-moderncombat.com/?page_id=1111).

I did get the exact same behavior as before, I am NOT able to edit the installation directory!

(Is the main download on moddb not updated? Am I doing something wrong? Or is the information about a fix false?)
Sidenote: In the interest of identifing version numbers and installer incarnations you should maybe rename your installer files From ModernCombat.msi to like ModernCombat1016b.msi or something.
