How are crossbows actually employed by the PLA? IIRC they're only used by SoF in unique situations?

Thanks for all the pics btw. ;)

Mostly for SoF units and riot units, perhaps.
After all, the range of a crossbow is too short (200m at most).

btw, here's an picture of real PLAGF infantry squad. They're now using unsupported version of PF-98 instead of Type-69II.

Could you possibly tell me the exact loadout of a PLA infantry squad? Including Engineers and SOF? I haven't been able to find out myself.

Thanks, that's really helpful! Do squads operate in fireteams of 2?

More importantly, what about non-motorised squads? To my understanding they have 12 men per squad (3 'cells' of 4 men each), but no doubt I'm misinformed?
  • 1 squad leader, with a QBZ-95.
  • 2 riflemen, with QBZ-95s.
  • 1 marksman, with a QBU-88.
  • 2 machine gunners, with QBB-95s.
  • 2 assistant machine gunners, with QBZ-95s.
  • 2 AT operators, with RPGs/PF-98s.
  • 2 assistant AT operators, with QBZ-95s.

And Marines, Engineers, SOF, etc? Any clarification would be awesome. ;)

Of course they operate in 2 fireteams, both squad leader and vice squad leads one - usually, but depends.
All regulars of PLA are motorized or mechanized. There's no non-motorized "light infantry" in PLA now.

US Army uses 12 men (in fact there are 13, including squad leader) squad, but PLA is different. ;)
PLA doesn't have marksman for every squad, there're only 3 marksmen in a company.
Both launcher and ammo of PF-98A are too heavy, and there's no need to take two for every squad. PLA uses much more lightweighted PF-89s(80mm) instead.

PLA Marine uses 10 men squad, similar to PLAGF squads:
Squad Leader: 1 QBZ-95
Vice Squad: 1 QBZ-95
Machine Gunner: 1 QBB-95
Assistant Gunner: 1 QBZ-95 and additional ammo for Machine Gunner
Grenade Launcher Operator: 1 QLB-06
AT Operator: 1 Type 69-II, don't know which kind of sidearm are used.
Assistant AT Operator: 1 QBZ-95 and additional ammo for Rocket Launcher Operator
Rifleman: 1 QBZ-95
Rifleman: 1 QBZ-95
Marksman: 1 QBU-88
PLA Marine doesn't take PF-89, because their imaginary enemy are Taiwan and Japan, neither of which have considerable amount of heavy armor.

For PLA SoF squad loadout, there are few official informations. But infer from public released informations, PLA SoF mostly uses 4 men squad.

The loadout of flamethrower squad of chemical company (belonging to combat engineer regiment) is 9 men squad with 3 flamethrowers. I didn't find loadout of other branches of PLA engineer unit.

One more thing to remind, PLA engineer doesn't wear Type 87 woodland, they wear Type 07 universal digital like regular.
A backpack could make a difference big enough between engineer and regular. ;)

The crossbows might make an interesting upgrade for a unit if the coding can be implemented. They allow the unit to stealth like a sniper, but firing does not break stealth. They're mid-range, slow-firing, not huge damage, so they're more of a harassment tool than anything else. However, when they do hit a target, the "unit sniped" icon pops up, letting your opponent know something is in the area.

Thoughts? One primary issue can be for newer players who, unfamiliar with the game may actually be looking for snipers and not realize these crossbows are an upgrade. Also, blobbing these and parking them in an enemy base to demolish retreating units could be very nasty and very hard to counter.
