For other weapons in the game:
Type 81 rifle: used by infantry units, but almost retired.
Type 99 MBT: used by small number of elite armored regiment.
Type 89 Tank Destroyer: used by AT battalion of artillery brigade of Army.
Type 96A MBT: used by armored regiment and tank battalion of heavy mechanized brigade.
Type 02 ARV: used by recon platoon of armored regiment.
ZBD05 IFV: used by heavy mechanized battalion of armored regiment of amphibious assault division.
ZTD05 Amphibious Light Tank: used by tank battalion of armored regiment of amphibious assault division.
PHL03 MLRS: used by long-distant MLRS regiment of artillery brigade
In fact, the most powerful amphibious assault troops of PLA is amphibious assault divisions of PLAGF, not marines.

PLAGF Amphibious Assault troops are to take Taiwan back, and PLA Marine are to take islands back which are captured by Vietnam and Phillipines on the southern China sea.

It is curious that around 90 % of PLA vehicles are Amphibious...Only tanks are not Amphibious....LOL XD
Do you have a lot of rivers on china?
It is kind of weird because china is on mainland (china is not a island like Japan) usually all countries agroup their forces around the frontier with other countries.... but if you look the PLA forces is more destined to make and Amphibious attack.

I think it is just because PLA wants to add more tactical flexibility depending on the combat vehicle itself, instead of relying on the engineer unit.

At eastern and southern part of China, yes. There're many rivers, lakes, paddy fields and wetlands all over eastern part and southern part of China, which is difficult for heavy vehicle to go through.
In fact, vehicle like ZSD-89 are not designated amphibious vehicle, only have the capacity of "float" on the water surface, and advancing at a very low speed (5kph). For northern groups, such capacity is not a necessity.
There are only several divisions of PLAGF and several brigades of PLAN are real "amphibious" troops, equipped with designated amphibious vehicle which have a over 40kph speed on water surface, and able to make a OTH amphibous assault.

There's one thing needs to be corrected, is that all of towed Type 86 are replaced by mechanized PLL-02 (with the same Type 86 Gun).No more towed AT gun are used by PLA.
