Since the Apache is selectable in game once called in, why not make the close range Rocket pods default and give the unit a clickable ability button for firing a long range hellfire at a selected target? Or do the opposite, make the long range hellfires default and make a click button to fire a rocket barrage at a selected area target?

It's too difficult to make a flying object selectable on code.

Hmm, perhaps you are using a newer version and that is the case for you. I'm using an older version and when I call in the Apache I can select it just fine. I even tweaked it in a little mod I was making for my own enjoyment and I can select the Apache and move it around the map once I call it in. I tried to give it abilities but I could never get them to work and eventually gave up on it.

Anyway, just an idea.

Which version of mod are you playing?

Why not update to 1.016?

The Apache is currently selectable, but unfortunately it only works when you drag the mouse over the terrain beneath it or click its unit tab to the right of the screen.

Selectable but not able to control like medic? I've heard someone modified the Apache controllable, but when he tried to control Apache, whereever you want it to go, it flies off the map.
If you guys wanna get Apache moving, maybe you can try this:
Make Apache a ground vehicle, and set it model and collision box "hovering" from the surface. Then give it a new type_target, and set all weapons (except air-defense weapons which can fire automatically) unable to target it.
The only problem of this method might be the Apache won't be able to fly over obstacles or buildings.

That's actually how it's already set up. It's fully controllable but its movement speed is set to 0.

It's possible to make it move, no worries there, but because it adheres to the terrain it just doesn't look right. No way around that. And it can't fly over objects like buildings and trees.

Maybe if Relic ever enable CoH2 modding and we manage to port MC over we'll be able to take advantage of the new flight coding. :)

Can we change the unit "status" between air and ground, like Gliders of Commonwealth Faction of vCoH?
If so, can we move the Apache with a new "moving command" ability instead of direct moving command, which change the unit "status" to "Air", move the unit, then change the unit "status" back to "Ground"?
After all, we don't move the helicopter often.

The Apache in my little modded version of 1014 I have set to movable but I find I rarely need to do so. I increased the range of the hellfire missiles so when I call it in it will target any nearby infantry with its cannon and launch a couple hellfires at any armor or vehicles in LOS a fair distance away (I think I doubled the default range). Usually it fires 2 - 4 hellfires, enough to take out a chinese tank or a couple apcs, before flying away. Very rarely I select it and move it, usually in order to strafe or circle a gaggle of infantry. I don't really notice that it looks odd moving, at least not enough to break immersion for me. The only thing I wish I could get it to do is use ability buttons to fire either a rocket barrage at an area (similar to rocket arty) or a long distance (basically strike almost anywhere on most maps) single shot tank killer / bunker buster missile.

I only play SP skirmish so I don't consider MP balance, im just adding my 2c to the discussion though I realize that my ideas are likely useless in an MP context.

Anyway, love the mod regardless. you guys did a fantastic job all around. Thank you.

You're welcome. ;)

A hellfire ability could work, but IMO it would be wasted on a doctrinal unit that only appears for less than a minute.

Well there's no simple air/ground switch, but it's possible to have it fly offscreen and reappear somewhere else, yeah. We discussed it before release but Onkel decided against it.
