Sabot round? shouldn't Abrams use APFSDS as default ammo?

no, the abrams use the "heat munition" like default munition (heat are for destroy light and medium armored vehicles like IFV and ICP)
the sabot is special munition for heavy armored tanks like Type 99 or type 96...(is special ability with cost per shot and reload time)
the "Canister munition" shot is used against infantry and sometime choppers....(ability with cost per shot and reload time)

I know what HEAT is, and I'm always doubting why modern tanks are still using HEAT...only because it's cheaper? But APFSDS and HE could deal with everything, what's more, one more different munition type brings more trouble to logistics departments.

no my brother... you can not use a sabot against light armored vehicles (ICP or IFV) because if you use this munition against them, well... the shoot only through the vehicle from one side to other side... it is like kill a fly using a shotgun...
The "Heat" is special munition for IFV and IPC because this munition impact in the objetive, make a little hole in the vehicle armor and burn everything inside them...
The Soldier wrote:As far as I know, HEAT does double-duty for AT and AI, it can effectively destroy light and medium vehicles and take out infantry (to an extent).
that is correct.. the "heat" can destroy a tank but the problem with the "heat" is you need to be close to the enemy tank to make a positive impact....the shoot distance rank is short if you try to compare this with the "sabot" effective attack distance
HEAT retains penetration power since it's a a shaped-charge round. And I think SABOT (at least, during WWII - APDS) tends to lose penetration power (or accuracy, can't remember) over distance because of the thinner shape.

I've seen light armor being destroyed by APFSDS. The shot hit the front armor of the vehicle, messed up the driver's chamber, destroyed radio and other equipments inside the vehicle, and then messed up the engine on the rear. Vehicle is not ship, penetration of the vehicle means destroy.
