Balancing US

Post by spartasmaximus »

You know it was a matter of time before I creep my way into the forums. Nice main website... looks weird, but just so clean lol.

Anyways Been playing Blitzkreg mod and I saw 3 things that reinforced what I been saying for a while.

1- Slit Trenches... I know i know static gameplay... but against overwhelming Chinese numbers they sort of make sense. Not really ...a must but maybe you can reconsider.

2- Snipers. Both the US and the Marines use the same fireteam sizes, 4 guys. Since they are so vulnerable to snipers I dont know if you could make US infantry take two shots to kill one infantry...?
-The other point of this is to have snipers available from T1 for the Army.

3. Last but certainly not least you've heard it before. Remove the ammunition consumption for the at4. Have the AI use it on their own as the marines use the smaw. It is a HUGE deal how marines use the smaw without ammunition but the army has to spend it.

True!, that the AT4 is a one time fire, but still it is a single round, no different is marines having to carry extra launch tubes for the smaw.

What I suggested before however is make the AT4 loose ground compared to the smaw but gain in others:
-Less accuracy vs infantry
-More damage vs buildings

In other words make the AT4 be more effective against big targets... tanks and buildings.

Well that is pretty much it... this was from .014 haven't tried the new one yet :P can't yet anyways. I might find out this was done already and I am talking stupidness :P

BTW... hardcore is amazing :P. Find it easier to tackle the chinese. Although the AI spamming those anti tank vehicles makes short work of my flimsy strykers...funny how I need numerical superiority to beat their units... ironic I think is a better word.

Now not to be a bitch, so let me say what I loved too... few things for patting your back:

Sniper upgrades... awesome
Marines... love their SMaw, infantry can finally tackle enemy armor better, although I think their hp should be higher.

Now... weirdo factor:
The way you capture points on hardcore...actually I am broken on this one, is really a pain or a blessing. it isn't both... I say it because a humvee now works like the chinese little mini tank thing ATV something :P. But I dont agree how one unit can capture the region from the outskirts. I take advantage of this ...exploit, and so does the enemy. They stay in one building and I am in the middle and we are at contest.

Dont know if it could be both. If you are within the region you get to begin capturing it, BUT if you send a unit to the actual flag point you get extra capturing ..speed or power.

To offset me or the AI staying on the fringes of the region and still counting as a capturing contest.

------------
Bugs:
Beaux Lowlands, the main bridge does not blow. The engineers instead throw the demo charge at their feet... and blow them selves up.

-----------
Last minute suggestions:
In blitzkrieg the demo charges are 4 charges set on the bridge which you can choose to blow when you want to make a trap.
Dont get me wrong... I love both ways, throwing and setting demo charges. Is there a way you can do both?

Not sure if throwing demo charges be more expensive but faster?
While setting demo charges less expensive but more time consuming?... and invulnerable to return fire, unless engineer's minesweep the bridge... which they wontbecause they'll get killed lol.

In other words I guess what I am trying to get to, is to be able to set demo charges again, and have that icon to "blow" them up, to set a trap, aside from ordinary mines.

Just to quickly say this was changed by Relic, and has nothing to do with us. So we cannot change it, without making a duplicate map.

The SMAW rocket canisters are much smaller and easier to carry than the AT4. They are very much different. Typically, we would have a SMAW gunner and his A-gunner. You can spread load this way and carry more. You can't do that with the AT4.

I do like the idea of not costing anything past the upgrade, but I don't think it should be an upgrade and forget it weapon. The AT4 is not as portable as a SMAW and it isn't reloadable, so I think making it necessary to manually fire it more closely mimics the actual fire rate versus the SMAW.

For the snipers. The Army doesn't put as much value on their snipers as we do. I like the snipers being available earlier for the Marines. It sets them apart, and rightfully so.

Just my thoughts.

To Dark:

Ah... nvm mind if is too much trouble then well, put it down on your low list of priorities I was just pointing it out.

To Snow
True they are easier to carry hence why I said they should loose on some ground... less accuracy. My main issue is ME having to use them and the ammunition consumptions. Maybe have it fire far less often?

but my two main pains are the baby sitting. You dont gota tell your units to snipe a target, snipers do it on their own. They have ammunition already alloted when they deploy. Same for any unit. hated in Blitzkreg how EVERYTHING takes ammunition to use... wana snipe? pay... wana artillery, pay, wana OJ, pay... want a blowjob... pay. Exaggerating of course but units when they go out into the field get their own ammunition already issued.

SO I guess maybe for AT4 once upgraded:
-AI uses them
-No cost in using them
-Less accuracy against infantry
-The firing rate is 33% less than a smaw. to emulate you know less numbers.

The Issue being, is that the ARmy and Marines dont have the same... "squad" size, although we dont recruit squads I know but the Army has to do the same job with one less fireteam. Although this would come with the question why does the Army in MC have 5 guys instead of 4!?

Anyways, I just dont like baby sitting... unless is my beautiful artillery :P

On the Snipers... I see your point I honestly do... TO be honest, the hardcore mode really makes up for it. Snipers die really easily if they are not in a building in cover. So is easier to deal with them, and the m14 upgrade... is sorta nice. Still I think the m14 for the engineers should be packaged with the AT4 and AP rounds.

Oh and yeahguess is obvious but I love the enginees with m14's :P

Future stuff tips:

Maybe you can change, already this was discuss, the little bird for a drone skin?... maybe. :P

Cheers

I could get on board with that. The AT4 is a little bit of a pain when you're trying to focus on other things and have to remember where those AT4s are. Making them fire automatically, with the firing rate much slower would be a good option. The AT4 should be less accurate all around than the SMAW. With the spotting rifle, the ability to upgrade to optics and the verstility of the rounds fired through it, the SMAW is a vastly superior weapon to the AT4, and that should be reflected here.

We don't go out with ammo for the AT4. You get the weapon system, and when it's fired it's done. I think it just needs to be accepted that the AT4 is weak, and that's why we don't really use it. Trying to compare it to the SMAW just isn't realistic.

I don't really think we should compare the Marines and Army on anything either. We are very different, and trying to say the Marines have this, so why not the Army takes away from that. I like that they are different.

There are some changes I would make, but not many.

True is not my intention to make both faction just carbon copies of each other. Which would render the point of having the marines with their smaw useless. I guess my issue is

Marines get SMAW, anti tank weaponry that doesn't need a nanny... Army should get some sort of weapon for the same price, AT4 should have less accuracy all around but that would mean it would have to give on damage. In otherw rods, if attack speed is less, and accuracy is reduced, damage has to be greater. IN the end this is a game and balancing does come into play. Nevertheless given it fires slower and less accuracy you would have to make it stronger otherwise it would be firing spitballs and do more damage. Something's gota give I guess.

Now if we could all just be issued the Carl Gustav I'd be happier but well... we can dream >P

The real question is, what would they add to MC gameplay? And do the pros outweigh the cons?

spartasmaximus wrote:Snipers. Both the US and the Marines use the same fireteam sizes, 4 guys. Since they are so vulnerable to snipers I dont know if you could make US infantry take two shots to kill one infantry...?

You want US soldiers to be immune to sniper insta-kills?...

That was decided before I even joined. I wouldn't mind seeing 4-man Riflemen and Regulars but I doubt that's a priority right now.

spartasmaximus wrote:The other point of this is to have snipers available from T1 for the Army.

Army sniper has always bugged me, I've suggested changes over the years but he's remained as is. There was probably a reason for his current setup (T2 and nerfed camo), but I can't remember exactly what it was. DB probably knows.

spartasmaximus wrote:Last but certainly not least you've heard it before. Remove the ammunition consumption for the at4. Have the AI use it on their own as the marines use the smaw. It is a HUGE deal how marines use the smaw without ammunition but the army has to spend it.

The AT4 has a special place in the US tech tree. It's not a dedicated counter, but it allows basic T1 US infantry squads to fend off or finish off PLA vehicles in an emergency. If you have the munitions it can even be used to compensate for fewer T2 AT units like Javelins.

I'll be honest... I didn't want Marines to get the SMAW at all. Argued that a dedicated AT weapon for them would make Javelins more redundant and Marines too spammable. After all, you can give Marines frag grenades, smoke grenades and thermal goggles, allow them to lase targets for their own SMAW, they have much greater health and anti-infantry capability (even when upgraded), etc . I wanted Engineers to get the SMAW instead, and for Marines to keep the AT4.

So I agree with you, it is unfair how the Marines get to use their AT for free. But I agree with you for the opposite reason. :?

  • So Bradleys should automatically fire TOWs at no cost? That makes Stryker ATGMs redundant.
  • Grenades should be free? Hello grenade spam!
  • Mines should be free? Sounds like fun.
  • Booby traps should be free? Every single building and point on the map would be rigged.
  • SAWS and M203s should be free? Since squads have them by default IRL.
  • The PLA sniper should be able to decrew vehicles left right and centre for free? He's only using bullets after all.

Sorry to sound snarky, but hopefully you understand what I mean. The costs are there for a reason.

spartasmaximus wrote:Marines... love their SMaw, infantry can finally tackle enemy armor better, although I think their hp should be higher.

Their overall HP is already higher than that of Riflemen or Regulars...

Maybe they're spamming those tank destroyers because you have so many vehicles... ;)

Don't forget that the T89 is a doctrinal unlock. It's supposed to be powerful. Dunno what you're using to counter it but it sounds like you're trying to overwhelm it with Strykers or something.

spartasmaximus wrote:Sniper upgrades... awesome

They aren't new. They were there before 1.015, but only in HC.

spartasmaximus wrote:I say it because a humvee now works like the chinese little mini tank thing ATV something :P

Actually that's a bug, it shouldn't be able to cap in HC either. Sorry about that...

spartasmaximus wrote:I dont agree how one unit can capture the region from the outskirts. I take advantage of this ...exploit, and so does the enemy. They stay in one building and I am in the middle and we are at contest.

That isn't exploitation, that's how it's supposed to work. You have to clear out the entire territory for it to be captured. :)

spartasmaximus wrote:Dont know if it could be both. If you are within the region you get to begin capturing it, BUT if you send a unit to the actual flag point you get extra capturing ..speed or power.

Not a bad idea actually, but it just isn't possible due to the way it's coded.

Maybe, but like we said it isn't vital atm. If we have time later. ;)

I was just going to point out the Javelin. If I'm not mistaken, the Marines don't get the Javelin. I think it goes back to the differences between the Marine Corps and Army. Marine Infantry is typically deployed ready to handle anything, where you will see the Army typically has a more specialized focus. I see nothing wrong with the way the Marine infantry works. If anything, maybe they should have a higher population hit, or cost more.

I like the way the snipers work too. The Army doesn't utilize snipers to the extent that we do, and it shows in the game. I still think Delta should make their way into the mod. They are easily the best shooters on the planet, and upgrading them with a sniper would make for a fun game.

Since this is turning into sort of a suggestion thread, would an infantry only game type be possible? I enjoy the infantry gameplay, and just as it's getting good, armor shows up and ruins it. 8-)

I'd also like to see Rangers replace Airborne, and Delta replace the Green Berets. I honestly think a SOCOM doctrine/reward faction would be amazing. I realize that's a lot of work, but I have always wanted to see that in an RTS. That's not really even a suggestions, just an idea I've liked. Maybe I'll learn how to mod, and come up with one. ;)

1st SFOD-D and 75th Ranger Regiment sounds a bit too OP, IMO. Modern Combats' battles take place across open fields with regular army against an regular army. 101st Airborne are there to assist ground elements in taking ground from the PLAGF, Green Berets are your regular "mid-level" SOF which are specially trained for guerilla-style combat and for ensuring the enemy does not pass undamaged. MARSOC are a bit like the 101st IRL and the Navy SEAL are the highest level SOF to appear in Modern Combat.

Delta functions as a SMU (Special Mission Units) and would never be used as the way other spec ops are used in the game.

I don't see it that way. If we can have MARSOC and SEALs, we can have anyone. MARSOC is not a bit like the Army airborne. MARSOC is closer to the SEALs and Delta than any other SOF, yet we find them at that level. This is why I changed the 101st to Green Berets and the Green Berets to Delta.

MARSOC wouldn't be used the way they are in the game either, and here we are. It's a game, not a war simulation. The maps are small enough that SOF could be incorporated. There are plenty of maps that offer great gameplay for what I had in mind for some of the SOF.

Also, I've worked with Delta, and they function as many things.
